The rear brake cylinder, often known as the rear wheel cylinder or brake cylinder, is a component of a car's drum braking system. It is responsible for applying hydraulic pressure to the brake shoes so that they can generate braking force by pressing against the brake drum. The rear brake cylinder converts hydraulic pressure from the brake system into mechanical force to engage the rear drum brakes. When the brake pedal is depressed, brake fluid is transferred from the master cylinder to the rear brake cylinder, inflating one or more pistons inside the cylinder. This action creates friction by pushing the brake shoes up against the braking drum, slowing the vehicle down.
